Honeywell AI platform to support EV battery manufacturing research

Honeywell announced that its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform (Battery MXP) will be integrated into the Alabama Mobility and Power (AMP) Center’s battery research laboratory at the University of Alabama.

The battery manufacturing automation platform is intended to support improved cell yields and faster facility ramp-up for battery manufacturers.

The AMP Center focuses on research and development related to mobility and power technologies, including electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and battery energy storage systems. Honeywell’s Battery MXP will serve as the lab’s primary automation platform for battery manufacturing research and pilot-scale production development.

The platform is designed to support battery manufacturers in scaling production while maintaining process control and product quality. In addition to research activities, the system will also be used for workforce training programs intended to prepare engineers and technicians for roles in battery manufacturing.

At the AMP Center, Honeywell is also collaborating with FOM Technologies to optimize electrode manufacturing processes within the Battery MXP environment. Electrode coating and processing are widely considered among the most technically demanding stages of battery production, requiring precise process control to maintain consistency and cell performance.

The collaborative effort is intended to support development of automated manufacturing workflows that battery producers and OEMs can use to improve production efficiency and battery quality.

The AMP Center battery research laboratory is expected to open in the second quarter of 2026. Once operational, the facility will function as a pilot battery production site available to external organizations for testing manufacturing processes, training personnel, and validating production technologies related to EV batteries.

“The rapid evolution of battery technology calls for a skilled workforce and advanced production capabilities at large scale, including comprehensive automation platforms powered by AI,” said Russ Ford, president of Honeywell Process Automation Solutions.
