Siemens adds ECAD and project generation to engineering AI

Siemens has announced two new capabilities for the Eigen Engineering Agent at VivaTech 2026 in Paris. The Eigen Engineering Agent, introduced in April 2026 at Hannover Messe, is designed for industrial automation engineering tasks that extend beyond on-screen assistance.

Industrial AI for automation engineering

While many AI tools provide suggestions, the Eigen Engineering Agent is designed to plan, execute and validate industrial automation engineering tasks. It can interpret project requirements, write control software, configure systems and refine outputs against defined quality criteria. The aim is to reduce manual engineering work and allow engineers to focus on higher-level system decisions.

The Eigen Engineering Agent works with the TIA Portal engineering platform and is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.

Deployment and engineering use cases

According to Siemens, more than 100 companies in 19 countries are using the Eigen Engineering Agent, including ANDRITZ Metals in Austria, CASMT in China and Prism Systems in the United States. The software is used for tasks such as programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, human-machine interface (HMI) visualization and device configuration. Siemens reports execution speeds of 2 to 5 times faster than manual workflows, up to 50 percent efficiency gains in engineering and an 80 percent improvement in overall solution quality.

With the addition of ECAD integration and standards-compliant project generation, the Eigen Engineering Agent can now use more of the engineering context that exists before software development begins, including hardware topology, machine structure and engineering intent. These additions are intended to support earlier stages of the automation lifecycle and reduce manual project setup.

ECAD integration for design and automation workflows

Electrical and automation engineering are often carried out sequentially using different tools and data structures. Electrical engineers typically define wiring and hardware in ECAD tools, while automation engineers create tags, function blocks and control logic in automation software. Moving information from one environment to the other often requires manual entry, name correction and hardware change tracking.

The Eigen Engineering Agent can read electrical design files in formats including XML and AML. It can identify inconsistencies, flag or resolve them, add devices to a TIA Portal project, configure connections and generate PLC tags based on the hardware topology. This is intended to reduce manual translation work between electrical design and automation programming.

Standards-based project generation

New automation projects typically begin with defining machine structure, module names, data organization and operating states before control software is written. This setup work can take significant time, particularly for less experienced engineering teams.

The Eigen Engineering Agent can now convert machine descriptions into standards-compliant projects. Engineers describe the machine in plain language, including stations, devices and expected behavior, and the agent generates a project based on the Siemens Automation Framework for structuring TIA Portal projects. The generated project can then be opened directly in TIA Portal for further development.

Both capabilities are included in the standard Eigen Engineering Agent subscription at no additional cost.
